Why do I pick up a book and what makes me buy it?

Why do I pick up a book and what makes me buy it?

What makes a person pick up a book and want to buy it? Well for me I’m first drawn in by the books cover. Now I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover but let’s be honest, the first thirty seconds oh judgment is done with our eyes, therefore, we are judging the cover of the book. So what makes a good cover? Colour, Text, Images? I like a cover that tells you about the book before you’ve read the blurb, I use the cover as an insight into what the book is about. So I thought I would show you some examples of book covers that I like and some that I don’t like.

Covers I Like:

These are two examples of great book covers, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. The cover shows you the Hogwarts Express and Harry Potter himself, showing his scar. A great cover full of information about the storyline and plot of the book. The second book, Felix the Railway Cat, Shows a railway and a very cute black and white cat wearing a conductors hat. This tells you where the cat lives, the cats name and draws you in because the cat is so cute (at least it did for me)

Covers I didn’t like:

The first book, Bookclub, although this cover is very colourful and appealing to the eye with nice writing for the title. A butterfly with a person in the middle does nothing to explain what the book is about and for me doesn’t link into the title. The second book, Fix Me again is colourful, however, for me having the title the same colour as the background take away from the title’s importance and I feel the title is another very important feature of a book. Again this book cover to me does not tell me anything about the book, about what the book is going to be about.

After being drawn to a books cover we then go to the blurb. I personally like a short but to the point blurb with snappy sentences which draw me in. I also like to see quotes from other authors who have read the book and voiced their opinions. This tells me if another author has read the book, especially an author I know and like then there is a good chance that I too will enjoy the book.

The other thing I tend to do is go straight to my favourite authors to check if they have anything new out, this is of course now made a lot easier with the ability to pre-order. Pre-ordering is fantastic, I love being able to pre-order a book, so I know that as soon as it is published it will be delivered to either my Kindle or my home. The excitement of putting on the calendar when the book is due out and due to arrive, the excitement of waiting for it to arrive. I love the build-up to a new book being released by one of my favourite authors (I have a list)

So, that is my process of choosing and buying a new book. How do you choose which books to buy? What draws you in? I’d love to hear your thoughts on what makes you pick a book up.

Keep your eye out for my post of Kindle V’s Books. The ever growing argument, I’d love to hear your views on that too.

When Gaia wakes up in a cell she soon realises she’s been kidnapped by a human trafficking ring, with no memory of her life or who she is, things seem impossible. Suddenly Gaia is rescued by a mysterious man, who turns out to be a prince, Can Gaia regain her memory and figure out who she is before its too late?

This book was a little slow to start with but once it got going, I really enjoyed it. I found the plot to be really interesting. I found the relationship between Gaia and Raoul to be really good, I enjoyed the build-up of their relationship and I especially liked the plot twist with the pirate. I found this book to have several plot twists which really added to the plot, making the reader really want to read on to find out what happens next.

This book finished with a cliffhanger, leaving me seriously desperate to read more. I seriously cannot wait for the next book to come out.

Clemmies War is a new take on where we go after we die and what happens to us. When Clemmie dies she passes though into Chalk House, an enchanted home for dead children. The question on everyones mind is how did Clemmie die? What effects is her death having on the world and everyone in it? But not only that what effect is it having on time?

This book was a really refreshing new take on the afterlife full of twists and turns. The story is original and builds up throughout the book, I have not read another book like it before.

The characters are brilliantly thoughtout and really add to the storyline and enhance the readers experience when reading. Its like your there with the characters , in the story, going through everything with them.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more by this wonderful author.

This book consists of a few short stories mostly about climate change and the effects it will have on the future. The book also contains a collection of poems after each short story.

I enjoyed the poetry in this book very much. This book was a quick and easy read. The short stories didn’t really take my fancy, I felt maybe if one of the short stories had been taken and made longer, alongside the poetry then the book would have worked a lot better.

However, like I said I really enjoyed the poetry, I found the poems to be really thought-provoking and very interesting and me for it is the poems that made this book worth reading.

Every Three Hours is the sixth book in the Darby McCormick series by Chris Mooney. Darby is back in Boston with Coop. When she arrives at Boston police station she is confronted by a guy wearing a suicide vest, claiming to have planted several bombs around the city, which he intends to set off every three hours if his demands are not met.

I enjoyed this book, it was different from the others in the series, rather than chasing a serial killer she is dealing with a single person threatening the whole of Boston. It was also nice to see Darby’s father mentioned again, as I believe a lot of what led Darby to where she is today has to do with her father.

As always this book was well written with a great plot and fantastic characters. I have now read the whole series and cannot wait to read more of Chris Mooney’s books.

This is the third book in the series, looking through my review I realised I never did a review of this book so without further ado here it is.

When students start to go missing and turn up dead with a statue of the Virgin Mary sewen into their jackets, Darby is called in to help look at the evidence and help catch the killer as usual its not long before the killer has his sights set on Darby and she is caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

I did enjoy this book however, I found it to be a bit slower than the previous books in the series. Once the book got going I found it really good and couldn’t put it down. This series of books have taken me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and has quickly become one of my favourite series and Chris Mooney has earned himself a spot on my list of favourite authors. I cannot wait to read more of his work.

All in all a very well written book, with great plot and characters. An easy and enjoyable read, which leaves you desperate for more after each page.

This is the fifth book in the Darby McCormick series by Chris Mooney. Darby is back and hunting another serial killer. This one is known as the Red Hill Ripper. He takes families, ties them up and then kills them. Darby and Coop are called in to help process the evidence and help catch the killer. It’s not long before The Ripper has his sights set on Darby and is targeting her. Can she catch before he catches her?

I am really enjoying this series, this book by far is the best in the series so far. A huge plot twist at the end which I didn’t see coming. This book kept you guessing all the way through which is what makes a book great in my opinion.

Yet again another well written and thought out plot, easy to follow and very gripping. I couldn’t put it down. I read this book in a single sitting. I cannot wait to read the next one in the series.

This is the fourth book in the Darby McCormick series by Chris Mooney. Ten years ago Darby worked on an abduction case where a young boy was abducted and never found. Now ten years later he is back and has taken his family hostage, he is asking to speak to Darby an Darby only. What happened to him in those ten years and why is he back now?

This book is just as good as the previous three books in the series. This series is shaping up to be one of the best series I have read this year or in fact in a long time. This book keeps me constantly wanting to come back for more. A quote on the front cover of the book says “Will keep you up past your bedtime” truer words have never been spoken, this book kept me up well into the early hours as I just couldn’t put it down, I yet again found myself saying one more chapter over and over till I finally finished the book.

I love reading how Darby’s carer evolves and devolves and how her relationship with Coop grows throughout the books, I find myself desperate to know if they finally get together and if Darby will finally get the happy ending she deserves.

The cases Darby works are always really interesting and the book, in general, is very interesting, well written and keeps you captivated from the very first page right to the last page, it keeps you desperate to continue onto the next book to find out what happens next.

Christopher Harns is a lonely boy who’s never fitted in, he’s always been the black sheep of the family. Until one day Christopher finds a suitcase in the family attic when secrets start to get exposed. Everything changes. Finally, Christopher has a chance at happiness, what will he do to keep hold of it?

I found this book hard to get on with, I found it to be a really slow starter and it didn’t seem to pick up. I couldn’t  get into the story. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is that made this book so unappealing for me, It just didn’t keep me wanting to read on, it didn’t hold my interest and unfortunately, I was unable to finish the book. For this reason, I am unable to give this book a full review.
